Why do you think celebrities have such perfect teeth? A lot of us berate ourselves for not being as blessed as the camera-ready, but it doesn’t come natural to them, either. What it actually takes is money, and a great cosmetic dentist. So if you thought braces and an at-home whitening kit were all it took, we’ve got news for you. Here are 18 celebrities who threw down the big bucks and bought a new smile.

Teen idol Hilary Duff rose to fame playing the title role on Lizzie McGuire. The show was a springboard for Duff; she was soon singing and starring in big-budget films. Unfortunately, Hilary had a penchant for singing too close to the microphone, and ended up with chipped teeth as a result. She opted for porcelain veneers, and the results were shocking to say the least. Her first set was way too big for her mouth, but she sorted it out and is looking like a million dollars nowadays.

2. Lindsay Lohan

Smoking cigarettes and letting self-care fall to the wayside can lead to noticeable dental problems. Such was the case for Lindsay Lohan, whose chain smoking and club hopping was well-documented by the press. She ended up getting veneers to conceal the damage done to her mouth during her dark times. In the docuseries Lindsay, which followed the star as she struggled to sort her life out, fans witnessed one of her dental dilemmas. Lindsay’s veneers broke, and she had to get them repaired immediately, a source of great anxiety for her.

Invisalign and pro whitening treatments, or more intensive cosmetic procedures? A-lister George Clooney loves to hit the red carpet smiling from ear to ear. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that his teeth are of great importance. It’s entirely possible that they’re prosthetics, since they do look a little larger. Whatever he did, it’s working.

4. Tom Cruise

In the 1980s, Cruise was sporting the kind of crowded teeth that are the common result of a recessive genetic trait. They didn’t hold him back from becoming a mega movie star while still in his twenties, though. Fans speculate that Tom, who is rumored to have undergone numerous cosmetic procedures, has had his teeth redone a few different times. Like Clooney, his penchant for smiling broadly for the camera makes this totally understandable. Even if we do get a little nostalgic for his simpler, snaggletoothed days.

5. NeNe Leakes

Real Housewives of Atlanta star NeNe Leakes isn’t shy about saying what she wants, and telling you what she’s gotten fixed. In fact, she revealed the name and address of the dentist responsible for her bright, symmetrical smile. On top of getting veneers, fans of the show speculate that Leakes has required partial dentures, so dental implants are also possible. Either way, we’re sure that NeNe got exactly what she wanted. And if you’re wondering about that dentist, his name is Dr. Sam Saleh.

6. Nicolas Cage

Nic Cage has really been through the ringer with his mouth. The once-sad state of his teeth wasn’t due to lack of resources, as Cage’s real last name is Coppola, a dynastic family which includes industry legends. No, Nicolas voluntarily had two teeth pulled for his role in the 1984 flick Birdy, where he played a Vietnam vet. It’s a good thing they were only baby teeth that had stuck with him way past their due date! Since then, Cage has received veneers or implants that give him the great big choppers you see today.

7. Demi Moore

In 2010, Demi Moore shocked Twitter followers when she shared a photo of herself missing a front tooth. The actress said that she accidentally knocked it out herself! Moore claims that she was grinding her teeth at the time, and may been a little too tense – you think? Thanks to modern dentistry, you’d never know it today. At age 54, she’s still a knockout.

8. Miley Cyrus

Miley’s old smile was actually rather endearing. The Hannah Montana star was known for her less-than-perfect, rather gummy smile. She stuck with that look until the end of the show. Part of her massive post-Hannah transformation to an edgy pop star was getting dental veneers. Her teeth are now larger and completely even, but for a woman whose nickname growing up was “Smiley”, that’s perfect.

9. Celine Dion

Celine Dion is another case where her teeth before weren’t totally horrible. Yet, they also weren’t up to snuff for the high-visibility career she was pursuing. The Canadian songstress is definitely ready for her close-up now. It’s hard to say exactly, but she has definitely either gotten crowns or veneers since starting out in the biz. Her mouth gets a lot of attention courtesy of her legendary voice, and cosmetic dentistry just makes her that much more confident.

Part of rapper 50 Cent’s journey from the streets to the good life involved a little dental work. For the curious, he’s another celebrity that isn’t ashamed of the improvements he’s chosen to make. One admirable decision he made was to avoid a classic “I’ve got veneers” look – overlarge, with each tooth being of equal size. 50 instead asked his cosmetic dentist to leave his front teeth a little bigger than the rest. He explains that he still wanted to recognize himself when he looked in the mirror.

11. Christian Bale

Christian Bale is known as a very intense personality who is a method actor, fully immersing himself in each role and stopping at nothing to get it just right. Roles in films like The Machinist, The Fighter, and The Dark Knight are proof! So when he signed on to play Patrick Bateman in American Psycho, Bale knew his mouth had to match Bateman’s commitment to physical perfection. That’s why he underwent extensive dental work, and the results couldn’t have been more, well, perfect – he nailed the role. Since then, Christian has admitted that he misses the way he used to look.

As a teen, Gossip Girl and Age of Adaline star Blake Lively’s smile was markedly crooked. Fans speculate that Lively has since gotten porcelain veneers, among other procedures. It’s hard to say for sure, since stars have easy access to the best dentists in the world. It’s possible that Blake just benefitted from braces, a few caps, and pro whitening. Blake’s onetime dentist, Dr. Laura Torrado, has said a great smile is courtesy of brushing, flossing and mindful eating – so I guess the whole truth remains Blake’s little secret.

Zac Efron became a teen heartthrob overnight after starring in High School Musical. Millions of tween girls didn’t seem to mind at all that he had a pronounced gap between his front teeth. Poor LeAnn! These days, her personal dramas manage to outshine her country music career. Like a lot of celebs, LeAnn had “not enough teeth” and “too much gum” for an industry that’s known to be hypercritical of one’s appearance. In 2013, Rimes actually ended up suing a dentist who fitted her mouth with veneers and crowns. She claimed that a botched job left her needing nine root canals and bone grafting – yikes!

As we’ve seen here, a lot of stars end up getting multiple adjustments made to their smile until perfection is achieved. Not all stars lurk in recording studios and grace soundstages. Democrat Joe Biden spent eight years in the White House serving as Vice President to Barack Obama. Part of his legacy is his dazzling, easygoing smile. Dentists suspect that the VP has a mouth full of crowns due to the fact that each tooth seems to be the same color. A discriminating eye can also detect tooth shape that isn’t commonly found in completely natural teeth.

17. Megan Fox

Megan Fox has always been beautiful. But the actress seems determined to unveil an even hotter version of herself every few years. Katy Perry isn’t content with pop superstardom. The native Californian has launched a line of perfumes and has a cosmetics contract with Cover Girl. No, we’re not talking about the gem-encrusted grill she wore to the 2013 VMAs. Her natural teeth may have required orthodontia, or maybe she went for crowns or veneers, but there has been a noticeable improvement. You never know!
